New Phil at Newton Festival of the Arts

FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2022
Hyde Playground, Lincoln Street, Newton Highlands

6:30pm  New Philharmonia Pops Concert

Newton Community Pride welcomes New Philharmonia Orchestra for a fun, patriotic Pops Concert! The diverse program is full of light classical music, show tunes, songs from the movies and even a march or two! Free and open to the public this fun early summer concert is another opportunity to hear wonderful music up close and personal!

About the program:
The New Phil pops concert conducted by New Phil’s Principal Conductor Jorge Soto, will include traditional marches, favorite musical and movie selections, a little Brahms and the first movement of Haydn’s C Major Violin Concerto featuring Newton’s own Rebecca Gansner as soloist.

Our Soloist:
Violinist Rebecca Gansner comes from a family where everyone loves music. Rebecca started playing when she was five years old, joining the studio of an established Newton based Suzuki teacher, Jan Riggs.

Rebecca entered the orchestral program at the New England Conservatory in 2019 and has been a part of it ever since.  In the summers she loves attending Greenwood Music Camp in Cummington, MA, Rivers School Conservatory Summer Music, and classes at the Museum of Fine Arts.

For the past two years Rebecca has been studying violin in the studio of Anait Arutunian, enjoying regular solo performances and winning first prize at the MMTA Bay State String Competition in her age category last spring.

A student at Bigelow Middle School in Newton, Rebecca also loves reading, making art, participating in theater productions, and dancing with an Israeli dance troupe.  In her free time she enjoys spending time outdoors with her parents and two younger sisters.

7:30pm  Instrument Petting Zoo

Have you ever wanted to toot a flute? Slide a trombone? Bang on a drum?

The New Phil’s Instrument Petting Zoo is your chance! Children of all ages (that includes you too, grown-ups!), are invited to meet and try the instruments of the orchestra. New Phil musicians guide you on how to hold the instrument and how to make a sound. The Instrument Petting Zoo is a fabulous introduction to all the instrument families! Instrument Petting Zoos accompany each Family Discovery Concert. After watching New Phil musicians and the young guest artists play, your child will be inspired to try the instruments on their own! Discover a budding musician!

Then grab your lawn chairs, picnic blankets, & some popcorn —  head to the Hyde Bandstand to watch the movie, Casablanca!
