Since the beginning in 1995 the New Phil has presented family programming. Growing from one concert a year to three, our music directors, in house narrators, and local music educators have put together a unique format for these programs. The concerts last approximately 1 hour. New Phil’s annual holiday program for families; CELEBRATIONS is a special collaborative performance with a local children’s chorus along with students from the Boston Ballet School performing excerpts of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker.
The music for our other family programs is most often a student related work – a narrated piece or child soloist(s) with the remainder of the program being based on a piece that the orchestra is then currently preparing for performance in a subscription concert. The piece, or part of it, is presented in excerpts with a dialogue from one of the narrators about what the kids are hearing, intermingled with interactive clapping of the rhythms they are going to hear, marching to a brass tune, talking about dynamics, colors, instruments, etc.
These concerts give children an opportunity to hear “real live music” in a way that is accessible and fun. Our Family Concerts are always followed by our Instrument Petting Zoo where children of all ages are able to meet and try the instruments of the orchestra.
New Phil and Boston Ballet School (Newton) have collaborated with a performance of Let There Be Peace on Earth for many years during our annual Celebrations concert. We didn’t want to miss out on this year, due to COVID-19, so we hope you enjoy this virtual performance!
