New Phil is sad to announce the passing of our maestro, Ron Knudsen, who died peacefully in his home with his family, on Sunday, March 29. Ron was a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s violin section for 48 years and our leader since day one. While we will miss him greatly, we have had the privilege of decades of his musical guidance, humor, and friendship. He created a space for our group of amateur musicians to climb great symphonic heights and challenged us as individuals to grow our musicianship. There are many reasons to remember Ron, but we remember him most for his dedication to Music for All. Whether as audience members for a Classics, Pops, or Family Concert, as adult musicians looking for a home, or as student musicians or ballerinas performing side-by-side, Ron brought us together through music. Our best way to honor his memory is to continue to provide Music for All and to play because we love it; we hope you will join us. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made to the New Philharmonia Music Director Legacy Fund online or checks may be sent to PO Box 610384, Newton, MA 02461.

A musical celebration of Ron's life will take place in the afternoon on Sunday, May 31. Further details to follow. The Knudsen family established a CaringBridge site; to read messages from his friends and colleagues and to share your own, click here.
